About me
I’m Kirsty Christer, an experienced editor and proofreader with over ten years’ experience working in UK higher education and international academic publishing.
Alongside my freelance work, I am Managing Editor of The Design Journal, an international peer-reviewed research journal. In this role I work closely with authors, editors, reviewers, and publishers to support the publication of high-quality research.
Through this work I have developed a strong understanding of academic writing, research communication, and the publication process. I work with students, academics, educators, and creative practitioners, helping them present their ideas clearly and confidently.
My work has involved supporting students and researchers at international and UK higher education institutions, including Durham University, the University of Exeter, Sheffield Hallam University, Coventry University, Liverpool University and Loughborough University.
With over 10 years editorial experience on international peer-reviewed academic journals, The Design Journal and Design For Health, I have a thorough understanding of the academic publishing landscape.
As well as academic writing, I have also worked on education reports, training guidelines, and policy documents produced for international educational and assessment bodies.
From many years working at Sheffield Hallam University’s Lab4Living and Art, Design & Media Research Centre. I have particular experience in arts and design research, alongside education and health and wellbeing disciplines, and regularly work with interdisciplinary and practice-based research.
I frequently support authors writing in English as an additional language and enjoy helping clients translate multidisciplinary research and complex ideas for different audiences. I especially enjoy working with PhD students on what is their very personal and sometimes isolating journey. Being the fresh pair of eyes.
I am comfortable working with both traditional academic writing and practice-based research.
Alongside my editorial work, I also have many years’ experience in marketing and communications for arts and cultural organisations. I have co-ordinated international conferences, including the Design4Health series, and arts events.
I aim to provide careful, thoughtful editing that improves clarity and consistency while preserving the author’s voice.
I am based in Sheffield, UK, and work with clients across the UK and internationally. With a background in music, I love to sing and am a member of two choirs. At home I am kept company by my family and two dogs, Polly and Stella.
