Proofreading student work
My approach follows typical university proofreading guidelines and respects academic integrity policies.
Most higher education institutions have clear policies on what is and is not permitted when proofreading student work. You should check your university’s policies before we begin.
What I can do
I can:
- check spelling, punctuation and grammar
- ensure your paper meets the relevant reference style
- check and correct references and citations
- highlight edits in ‘Track Changes’ or ‘Suggest Mode’, with comments if necessary
- flag unclear or awkward phrases and sentences
- check and amend formatting and layout, heading styles and labels to ensure consistency
- update page numbering and Table of Contents, if required
What I cannot do
To comply with university guidelines and maintain academic integrity, I cannot:
- rewrite content
- suggest phrases
- advise on structure
- increase or reduce wordcount
- check content for accuracy
Important notes
The work must be your own. My role is to help ensure that what you’re writing is presented as clearly and accurately as possible, and in a tone and style that’s appropriate for your intended audience.
Different disciplines use different writing conventions. For example, the passive voice is often used in the sciences as it emphasises the object of research and the data. This style is more formal. In social sciences, arts and humanities, researchers often prefer to use an active voice – sometimes the first person – as this highlights the subject of the research and the research process itself. It is less formal and can be clearer.
If you are unsure of the expected style, it is best to check with your academic advisor or course guidelines.
I am mindful of the ethical considerations surrounding the use of generative AI in academic writing.
The human touch is what can make your writing stand out and sound like you. Automated tools can be useful when used appropriately, especially for those with English as an additional language, but a human editor is better able to pick up on nuances and subject specific detail, and the subtle cues that convey meaning and context. I will support you to bring out the best in your writing while preserving your voice as author, in line with academic guidance.
